Google’s Android broke 50,000 apps in April 2010. While this is only a quarter of the apps Apple has with approx 200,000, it sure makes these two platforms the leaders. When looking at the smartphone market leader RIM Blackberry who only has approx 6500 apps and then last decades leader Palm with only 2000 apps. We can see who the new giants will be. Of course having even 100 apps on your smartphone seems overkill, but it sure is crazy cool to look through 1000s of apps. These new computer platforms are the new laptops just in miniature form.

When we look at the market share, RIM Blackberry owns 44%* of the U.S. smartphone market making them the leader in the US (Nokia is #1 in the world market). Apple only has a 19% share, Motorola 13%, HTC 12%, while Palm is down at 5%. This should be interesting to see how it plays out.

Apple's iPhone and Google Android, where is the Palm and Blackberry?

Even though the Blackberry sold 10.5 million to Apple’s 8 million units within the last four months. Apple is crushing RIM in app downloads, with Apple being at about 15 million daily downloads to RIM’s 1 million.

Either RIM needs to make big changes quickly or look to Android as there new operating system. If not, RIM at this time next year will be taking a nose dive while Apple and Android powered phones will take the lead.

My recommendation if you are looking for a new cell phone is first look at Apple’s iPhone and make it your benchmark, then cell phones running open-source Android, just because of the vast amount of apps that are available. Features were nice but large amounts of small apps are today’s game changer.

So where is Microsoft in this? Surely they should have been fighting for a piece of this pie.

*Research In Motion took to the stage at its Wireless Enterprise Symposium event to share information about the company. The company threw out a lot of numbers. Most of the RIM numbers came from that event.

LimoSales.us was launched March 2010. Tim Wielonski, the owner and operator of Big Apple Limo Services was interested in creating an outlet for his limo sales business.

He has been selling, fixing and renting limos for many years in Palm Beach County, Florida. His first introduction into the web business was when he hired a web designer to build his first website BigAppleLimo-FL.com. Over a year after the launch of the first site he decided he should buy his first computer to read emails and learn the tech behind his website. After several phone calls and training with me as his webmaster he had become somewhat of a pro with Google adwords, Wordpress (the platform that runs his websites) and several other methods to market a business on the Internet.

LimoSales.us website

In 2009 Tim decided to buy an iPhone to give better customer support for those contacting him through emails or Twitter. Within the last few years he has gone from not knowing what a computer mouse was to… changing themes on wordpress to twitting through his smartphone. He uses a twitter account for each of the sites, this helps him connect with a larger audiences. The next area he is aiming to tackle is Facebook and LinkedIn.

Media Giant Plans to Crank Out Scores of iPhone Applications, Hoping 99-Cent Sales Add Up

Hearst, best known as a publisher of magazines and newspapers, is jumping into the business of developing software applications, or “apps,” for use on Apple Inc.’s iPhone. Hearst is focusing its apps on what it knows best: information, mainly in the realms of sports teams, players and celebrities, but also hobbies and topics, like coffee, Barbie and cupcakes.

Hearst eventually expects to offer thousands of apps that pull together news and photos about narrow slices of information. Dozens of applications already are available from Apple, with more expected to roll out over the next year. The apps sell for 99 cents and up for fans of the New York Yankees, Red Sox and other ball clubs, as well as for Rihanna, Taylor Swift, Coldplay and other musicians.

That’s right. The Internet was nominated for the illustrious prize by the Italian edition of Wired magazine, according to the institute.

Geir Lundestad, director of the Norwegian Nobel Institute, has acknowledged that the Internet’s nomination has become widely known. Lundestad added that Riccardo Luna, editor-in-chief of the Italian edition of Wired nominated the Internet for the prize.

The 237 nominees, including 38 organizations, are part of the largest group to vie for the annual prize. “It is easy to be nominated, difficult to win the prize,” Lundestad added.

The internet and TV are colliding. Or, as the industry calls it, converging.

The internet and TV are colliding. Or, as the industry calls it, converging. James McQuivey, an analyst at Forrester Research, says viewers are desperate to bring the everything-on-demand philosophy they have got used to on the internet to television. His firm estimates that 9 million Americans already connect their laptops to the television to watch videos -– everything from camcorder clips, through YouTube and Hulu (a broadcaster-funded venture similar to the BBC’s iPlayer), to movies downloaded via file-sharing services.

“Internet-connected television is already happening in the US in larger numbers than people are aware. It is just that people are doing it in a DIY capacity. This is not rocket science any more: you walk your laptop into the living room and use a VGA cable to connect it to your TV. But while it is not rocket science, it is not drop-dead simple either, so the fact that 9 million people do it even periodically is amazing.

TV through the internet is here to stay

Governments like Finland and Luxembourg want to deliver in the next five years fibre-to-the-home to the vast majority of their populations,” explained Paolo Campoli, director of solutions and business development at Cisco European and Emerging Markets.

“Finland has on the agenda 100Mbps by 2015 and 1Gbps by 2020, and I see other nations doing something similar.” He insists the eventual proliferation of 4G standards such as WiMAX and Long Term Evolution (LTE), which have been trialled at locations in the UK and Scandinavia in the past year, will also justify the ballooning bandwidth volume.

In comparison US expects 100 million households to have Internet service of at least 100 megabits per second by 2020. These speeds are at least 10 times faster than Internet speeds most U.S. residents get today but slower then goal set by others for 2020.
